My VivaBella Parcel

few days ago, my parcel from the VivaBella Bonanza Giveaway (Viva Woman) arrived. Sesame sent me some wonderful stuff. I love it!
I received some olive skin care products, face masks, hand cream, and a bracelet.
She wrote me a little note along with the items. Isn’t that just the cutest stationery!
The Tebe olive oil/olive leaf extract skin care products are Face Nourishing Day Cream, Eye Cream, Face Polish, and Lip Moisture Balm.
I love the Merri Love Lock bracelet. I was really hoping to get it, and I’m so happy I did. It’s adorable and it’s even small enough that it can fit tightly around my twiggy wrist.
Thank you so much, Sesame!

Giovanni Colorflage Conditioner is Late to the Game
November 13, 2009 at 12:30 pm | In Hair | Leave a CommentTags: conditioner, Giovanni, hair care, shampoo, sulfate-free
Ever since I first saw Giovanni Colorflage pop up in stores—which seems like a lifetime ago, now—I wanted to try it. I love haircare products geared towards specific hair colors. But I couldn’t try it, because only the shampoos were on the shelves.
A lot of time has passed and nothing’s changed. Every store I go to that stocks Giovanni Colorflage only stocks the shampoos. I have never seen the conditioners in the flesh. There are no spots for the conditioners, no price tags; it’s like only the shampoos exist.
This makes no sense to me. If I was going to only buy one half of the two-piece set, I’d buy the conditioner and keep using shikakai paste in place of shampoo. I’d never buy just the shampoo. The conditioner is the one that will deposit the awesome protective ingredients on my hair.
I really want to try Giovanni Colorflage Remarkably Red Shampoo and Conditioner, but not so much that I’m going to go through the hassle of ordering it online.
I considered using Giovanni Colorflage Remarkably Red Shampoo with John Frieda Radiant Red Conditioner, but I haven’t been able to find John Frieda Radiant Red Shampoos and Conditioners in stores lately.
Unable to buy the products I really wanted to try, I bought mirra Daily Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner yesterday.
So, Giovanni lost my business because the Colorflage Daily Color Defense Conditioner isn’t being stocked, and John Frieda lost my business because their Radiant Red Shampoos and Conditioners aren’t being stocked. Meanwhile, Kroger mirra Daily Shampoos and Conditioners are on sale for $4.49 (originally $5.99) each and are actually in Kroger stores so that I can buy them.
Giovanni Colorflage Shampoos and Conditioners may be the best things since canned bread, but I’ll never find out if the conditioners don’t show up at Target.
Hmmm, I wonder how much business Giovanni and John Frieda have lost because some of their products are nowhere to be found…
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Clear Scrub

I returned the Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser.
One reason I thought Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser would work for me is because I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Clear Scrub and love it. I use it in the morning in the shower, and it seems to do a good job of cleaning and exfoliating my skin. It has a light, soothing fragrance and it only irritates my skin when I scrub too vigorously.
Well, these must have really distinct formulas for me to have such drastically different reactions. Except…

Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser
Neutrogena’s Mysterious Oil-Free MicroClear Potions
You don’t need to go through the ingredients one by one; I already did that for you.
The unique ingredients in Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Clear Scrub are Polyethylene, Tocopherol, Cucumber Fruit Extract (Cucumus Sativus), Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Butylene Glycol, and Microcrystalline Wax.
The unique ingredients in Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser are Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract (Matricaria), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, and Propylene Glycol.
None of those ingredients seem particularly onerous. The difference between the two cleansers that really jumps out at me is the fragrance. The Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Clear Scrub has a naturally soothing fragrance that isn’t strong or perfumey. The Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser has an overpowering, “fake” smell that doesn’t belong in any skin care product.
Skin Brightening, Redness Calming Cleanser for Night
I considered getting Neutrogena Visibly Even Foaming Cleanser (I think I’ve used it before, but I can’t remember for sure); there are two reasons I decided against it: 1. It has little exfoliating scrubbers in it. 2. The last Neutrogena cleanser I tried didn’t work out.
So then, what to do…
Juice Organics Brightening Cleanser sounded good. It has nice ingredients and gets some good reviews. Plus, it’s supposed to brighten skin. But, I went to two different Targets and a Walmart and none had any Juice Organics products. It was frustrating; I know I’ve seen Juice Organics in stores recently.
Avalon Organics Vitamin C Hydrating Cleansing Milk seemed similar, so I picked that up instead. I like that it has White Tea in it. Since it’s so thick and creamy, I may try double cleansing, see how that goes.
Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Itching Powder
October 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm | In Beauty | Leave a CommentTags: cleanser, face cleansing, facial cleansing, Neutrogena, redness, skin care, skincare
I bought Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser with high hopes. I’ve been using it for about three days (at night only), and when I use it my face itches.
I don’t remember ever having this problem with any other products. I really wanted this cleanser to work, but I’ve decided not to push my luck and risk some awful allergic reaction. Three nights of wannabe-redness-soothing itchiness is enough for me. I’ll just try to return the stuff.

Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser
The cleanser starts to itch after it’s been on my face five to ten seconds. I thoroughly wet my hands and massage my entire face to make sure the cleanser isn’t starting to dry while on my skin, but it still itches. My face feels a little itchy when I rinse it off, but the itchiness completely goes away after I use toner.
I think it’s the fragrance in the Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser that’s irritating my skin. When I popped the top and sniffed the product, I hardly smelled anything. But when I start massaging it on my face, oh boy that scent is strong! Why did Neutrogena put irritating ingredients in a redness-soothing cleanser?
The Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser actually came with a free sample attached to it… but the sample just contains Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Cream Cleanser. It would’ve been nice if the sample included Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Gel Cleanser, because I’d like to be able to try that out, but after my experience with the cream cleanser I’m not going risk wasting time and money to buy any other products in the line.

Neutrogena Redness-Soothing Gel Cleanser
I’m not sure what to try next. There’s Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizing Cream Cleanser and Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing Cleanser.
I’ve been interested in Eucerin’s Redness Relief line, but most of the products contain drying alcohol. The cleanser contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate, which also makes me pause.
Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizing Cream Cleanser seems gentle, but Feverfew is way low on the list of ingredients. I tried Aveeno Ultra-Calming Night Cream a few years ago, but it didn’t work. It always burned a little when I massaged it into my skin. I used the whole jar but didn’t notice any improvements.
So, the moral of this story is that skincare companies don’t pay attention. People with facial redness probably have sensitive skin, too. This means redness-soothing products should not contain fragrance, drying alcohol, or harsh sulfates.

These are my current faves from the Calvin Klein site. I’d especially love to have the tab sleeve cardigan in red, black, and white and the Solid Boyfriend Cardigan in purple and black. Those look soooo super comfy, and there’d always be one to match any outfit.
